Immigration officers pick up AC Guatemalans

Two Guatemalans convicted of the aggravated assault of two other Guatemalans in Arkansas City in January were picked up by immigration officers earlier this week for deportation.

Amarildo Estrada-Barrios, 19, and Juan Carreto-Cojolon, 30, were originally charged with kidnapping the victims at knifepoint as the victims left the Wal-Mart store. They each pled guilty to reduced charges of aggravated assault.

Each man had two convictions. They were each sentenced to 12 months in prison on each charge. The convictions were to run consecutive. However, probation was granted in each case for 24 months.

Immigration officials put a hold on them so they could not be released from the county jail to begin probation. Cowley County Sheriff Bob Odell said immigration picked them up March 10.
