Child injured in wreck; Driver hit with a DUI

A Winfield man was cited for several traffic violations and faces criminal charges following a rollover accident Saturday that injured a young Cowley County boy. Authorities believe alcohol was involved.

Socrates Rex Johnson, 27, was northbound on 121st Road around 7:50 p.m. when his 1997 Buick LeSabre went off the east side of the roadway, according to a report from the Cowley County Sheriff’s office.

The accident occurred near the intersection of 121st Road and 176th Road, a few miles southeast of Winfield.

Johnson overcorrected and rolled the vehicle, which came to rest on its top in the west ditch. Connor Grigsby, 12, Burden, was ejected from the car and had to be transported to William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Grigsby was later transported to a Wichita hospital with a spine fracture, according to Undersheriff Don Read. Neither Johnson nor Grigsby was wearing a seatbelt.

Johnson was cited for driving under the influence, not wearing a seatbelt, transporting an open container, reckless driving, no child restraint, no driver’s license and having no liability insurance.

He is also facing charges for possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering a child and possession of an opiate drug. He remains in jail in lieu of a $9,200 bond.
