Winfield donut shop burglarized early on Fri.

For close to three decades, local donut maker Terry Krueger managed to avoid being the target of burglars at his storefront on Winfield’s Main Street. That changed this morning.

Krueger told NewsCow that someone broke into his Daylight Donuts shop, 910 Main, sometime before he arrived at 3 a.m. Friday. They pried open the building’s back door and did the same to the door on a safe inside.

The person or persons responsible got away with $1,500 in cash that had been set aside for rent and other payments. Krueger contacted police and his insurance company.

At first, he said, it wasn’t obvious someone had been inside. The person who broke in made an effort to conceal damage to the safe.

“I got to work and the deadbolt on the door didn’t work but the door was already unlocked,” he said. “Then I got to looking and knew something had happened. We’ve been pretty lucky, though. This is the first time in almost 29 years that something like this has occurred.”

Krueger thinks the culprit may have been familiar with the inside of his store.

“It was probably someone who knew where the safe was,” he said.

A Winfield police official did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
