UPDATE: Driver involved in pursuit named

An Oklahoma woman who led police on a high speed chase through two states Saturday has been identified as Lenny Ellsworth of Ponca City.

Newkirk officers were chasing a vehicle for a hit and run about 7 p.m.. when Cowley County Sheriff ‘s deputies and Arkansas City police were dispatched to the south part of Ark City.

The Oklahoma officers lost the car because of the excessive speed, according to the Ark City Police Department.

The 1990 Buick LeSabre entered the south end of town on U.S. 77.Spike strips were deployed but the car missed the device. The car continued north on Summit Street at nearly 70 miles an hour.

Local law enforcement chased the car for a short distance but backed down because of traffic congestion in the downtown area. Then citizen reports were received that the car was headed east on Maple Avenue from Summit Street.

Citizens helped by showing officers where the car had pulled into a private residence. Officers located the driver and she as taken into custody without further incident, and transported to the county jail.

The investigation found that Ellsworth has lost control of her car and struck a utility pole at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Summit Street. It appeared to police that she sustained a minor?cut to her left leg as a result of the collision.

Oklahoma officials are investigating two separate hit and run accidents in relation to Ellsworth.
