Governor will look at Jodi’s Law next week

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has received the anti-stalking bill known as “Jodi’s Law” that was passed unanimously by both the House and Senate.

“We have recently received this bill and the governor will review it fully with her team at our next bill review session,” Nicole Corcoran, the governor’s press secretary, said.

The team will meet early next week.

The law was proposed after an Arkansas City’s Jodi Sanderholm was kidnapped, raped and murdered in January 2007. Local law enforcement officers believe the current bill dealing with stalking has vague language that prevents?the law from being aggressively enforced.

The new law ?includes?changes that should give more weight and power to law enforcement and prosecutors so they can?get dangerous criminals off the street before they hurt or kill the person they are stalking, Ark City Police Chief Sean Wallace has said.

Sanderholm disappeared Jan. 5. Her car was found four days later in the Cowley State Fishing Lake, east of Ark City off U.S. 166. Her body was found about 11 miles away, in a wooded area near the Walnut River.
Justin Thurber of Ark City faces the death penalty for allegedly?killing Sanderholm.
