Participation still thin for township positions

A few more people have volunteered for township jobs but township residents still need 44 more candidates to make sure their tax dollars are spent wisely in the rural communities in Cowley County.

Each of the 25 townships in the county need to elect a treasurer and a trustee in the November general election. The third township board officer – clerks – aren’t up for election this year.

The filing deadline – June 10 – is less than a month away and only six people have put their names on ballots. They are:

* Robert Voegele for Bolton Township treasurer.

* Kent Olmstead for Pleasant Valley Township treasurer.

* Jack K. Shelton for Creswell Township trustee.

* Harold Bannon for Maple Township trustee.

* Michael Reynolds for Pleasant Valley trustee.

* Abe Elam for Walnut Township trustee.

Most township boards raise money through a mill levy and focus on road maintenance. Some boards?also have cemeteries to maintain. Their budgets are published in a local newspaper and a public hearing held before a final vote. Kansas law requires all of their meetings to be open to the public.

The primary election is Aug. 6. The general election is Nov. 4. Voter registration books are open for anyone to register for the first time or to update registrations. A person must re-register anytime they move or change their name.
