An Atlanta man was sent to a hospital in Wichita early Sunday after striking a bridge with his car north of Winfield City Lake, according to a report from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Department. Alcohol was present at the scene, the report indicated.
Shane L. Courtney, 21, was taken to Wesley Medical Center and is listed in fair condition, a hospital spokesperson said.
The accident occurred just after midnight a half mile north of the intersection of 151st Road and 52nd Road. Courtney was southbound on 151st when he lost control of his 1992 Mercury Cougar and went into the east ditch.
A reflective sign on the bridge was damaged.
The investigating officer at the scene said alcohol and use of an illegal drug might have contributed to the accident.
