Wedding day drama: Wreck, fight, no lights

A fight involving 15 to 20 people broke out during a wedding celebration at the former Moose Lodge south of Arkansas City early Sunday morning.

One man was treated at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center for some minor facial injuries. Another man left the party and struck a utility pole which caused a power failure in the area for approximately six hours, Cowley County Sheriff Capt. Bill Mueller said.

The first report was received by deputies at 12:17 A.M. of a fight involving a large number of people. A deputy was in the area and arrived at the scene shortly after he received the call. Other deputies and Ark City police also went to the scene.

“They discovered 15 to 20 people outside the facility yelling and pushing each other,” Mueller said. “After a few minutes, peace was restored. Nobody was arrested.”

The building housing the party is owned now by Roger Sparks and located at 32622 61st Road, in the IXL addition.

“I don’t think it was ever determined what started it,” Mueller said.

The report of the traffic accident was received at approximately the same time as the fight was reported. Jesse Palmer, 26, Ark City, left the wedding reception and was headed north on 61st Road when he struck a utility pole. The pole was sheared off.

Some areas were without electricity six to seven hours while Westar put in a new pole and restored power, Mueller said.

Palmer was transported to the local hospital by Ark City ambulance. He was treated in the emergency room and then released.
