Abrams leaves state BOE to rival Goodwin

Local veterinarian Steve Abrams is leaving the state school board and is challenging state senator Greta Goodwin for her seat in the Legislature.

Abrams, R-Arkansas City, filed in the Secretary of State’s Office this morning. The deadline for filing was noon Monday.

A spokeswoman in Abrams’ veterinary office said he is in Topeka on school board business and will return to Ark City Wednesday night.

A third candidate, George Leach, R-Mulvane, filed Monday for the same senate seat. Leach and Abrams will compete in the primary to see who will oppose Goodwin in the general election.

Goodwin, a Democrat from Winfield, was first elected to the senate in 1997.

If no other Democrats file before the noon deadline, then she will run unopposed in the primary while Leach and Abrams face off for the right to run on the Republican ticket in the November general election.

Three people have filed for Abrams’ seat on the school board.
