DeVore, Stone, Wilson are sent to Chapman

Three Cowley County men are part of a rapid response team that has been dispatched to Chapman to help in the aftermath of a deadly tornado that struck the town last week.

Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore, Fire Chief Curtis Wilson and Brian Stone, director of Cowley County Emergency Management will serve up to seven days. Stone left Sunday and DeVore and Wilson will depart Monday.

The three managers are part of the South Central Kansas Rapid Intervention Team, which is deployed to disaster sites as part of a mutual aid system that is used statewide, city and county officials said.

Last year, some crew members from the Winfield Fire Department went to Greensburg and Coffeyville to help with disaster recovery.

Stone, DeVore and Wilson will arrive in Chapman and be assigned duties by agencies that are in charge locally. Most of the time, those sent to disaster site do not know anything about the work they’ll do until they arrive.
