Dance troupe to perform at farmers’ market

A Wichita dance troupe will perform contemporary gypsy dance at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Walnut Valley Farmer’s Market.

L’Orient Dance Troupe, the original troupe of Amira Dance Productions, will perform under the big Sycamore tree at the market place at the entrance to Island Park. The city will have benches in place.

"This graceful yet dramatic dance form celebrates the traditions and culture of the Rom people," said WVFM organizer Dolly Bonfy. "Under the artistic direction of Pandora, L’Orient’s swirling silks, flashing swords and twirling canes define dance entertainment."

The farmer’s market is off to a good start this year, she said. Seventeen vendors were on hand last Saturday to market their vegetables, nuts, jewelry, handcrafts and baked goods, candles and snacks. Beets, onions, new potatoes, kohlrabi, zucchini and yellow squash, radishes, cucumbers and green tomatoes were available.

Bonfy expects green beans will be available this Saturday. The Dutchman will also be on hand to sharpen utensils and garden tools on the spot.

"In addition, we have a market volunteer, Barbara Mendoza, stationed at a table to host people and ask them to sign up for drawings each week," Bonfy said.

Union State Bank donated an insulated bag on rollers and Home National Bank donated caps last week. Ask Mendoza for a refrigerator-magnet reminder for farmer’s markets in Winfield and Arkansas City. Market bags will also be for sale.

The Winfield market is open from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturdays. Parking is close and convenient.
