Winfielder swims to the aid of struggling man

A Winfield man rescued another man from the Winfield City Lake Sunday afternoon.

Yunior C. Gonzalez swam out too far, his legs cramped and he was unable to swim any longer. He began calling for help, according to Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore. Arlen G. Samples swam to Gonzalez and managed to get him back to the beach.

City lake rangers were the first to arrive. With help from citizens in the area, they helped Gonzalez and Samples until emergency personnel arrived.

Gonzalez swallowed a lot of water and was exhausted. He was transported by Winfield EMS to Newton Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Samples was also exhausted and was evaluated by paramedics at the scene.
