Cedar Vale lands funds for recycling old tires

Grants awarded for waste tire recycling efforts include $8,500 for the USD 285 elementary school in Cedar Vale and $29,000 for four parks in Rose Hill.

Nearly $700,000 in grants were announced last week by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Bureau of Waste Management to municipalities and school districts across the state.

Most of the grants will go toward partially funding the purchase of products that provide safe resurfacing at playgrounds and for picnic tables and benches made from waste tires.

USD 465 in Chautauqua County will replace the existing rock with a waste tire playground surface at the elementary school.

In Rose Hill, wood mulch will be replaced with a waste tire playground surface at Deer Creek Park, Shorty Cox Park, Perkins Park and Grace Park.

"These efforts have the added benefits of conserving landfill space, encouraging recycling and reducing waste, along with the need for new waste facilities," said KDHE Secretary Roderick L. Bremby. "This grant program is definitely a ‘win-win’ for Kansas."
