Commission to canvass votes Monday morn

Tuesday’s primary election went smoothly, Cowley County Clerk and Election Officer Karen Brooks said.

"I have a lot of good poll workers," she said. "They are getting used to the machines."

The results will not be official until the county commission meets in special session at 9 a.m. Monday to canvass the returns and certify the results. The meeting is open to the public.

Brooks said there are 90 challenged ballots. Commissioners will consider the reasons the ballots were challenged by election judges and then decide whether the individual votes should be counted.

There are some township races where the voting was close and the challenged ballots could influence one or more of those elections. There were also some write-in votes to be considered, Brooks said.

Cowley County has 15,785 registered voters. Only 4,672 voted. That’s equates to 28.17 percent who cast ballots; 15.59 percent of the Democrats and 36.99 percent of the registered Republicans.

Voter registration books are open again.
