Wilson keeps commission seat by 12 votes

County Commissioner Gary Wilson, an Arkansas City Democrat, scored a narrow victory over challenger Bob Voegele, according to a final tally released Monday morning.

A morning canvass of votes showed Wilson received 1,906 votes and Voegele received 1,894. Wilson is completing his first term as representative for the county’s second district.

The two candidates had been separated by 20 votes on election night and further counting dropped the margin to 11. Wilson had a net gain of one vote following the canvassing.

Voegele has until 5 p.m. Wednesday to ask for a recount but he has indicated he would not take such a step, according to county clerk and chief election official Karen Brooks.

The vote in the county commission race was not the closest in Cowley County. That distinction belongs to a question in Bolton Township.

Voters there decided – by a count of 330 no to 328 yes – again a measure to remove a 2.25 percent intangibles tax.
