Sally Ann Burr is Community Cornerstone winner

CornerBank has announced Sally Ann Burr is the Community Cornerstone Award recipient for January. In recognition of her service, CornerBank will contribute $100 to the Legacy Community Foundation to support additional community development projects.

A reception honoring Sally’s service will be at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 28, in the CornerBank community room, 125 N. Summit.? The public is invited to attend the reception.

Sally is a member of the ACE Fund Committee, which is the Ark City Public Schools’ Enhancement Fund. Through the group, she has worked on a restoration project to restore more than a century’s worth of seniors’ pictures for permanent display at ACHS.?

She is coordinator of the ACHS Class of ’59 scholarship endowment effort.

She has been a PraireFest volunteer in multiple capacities, including co-chairing the event in 2007.?

She received the PrairieFest volunteer of the year award in 2006. Sally is a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter GH, where she has been recording secretary, vice president and on the program committee.?

Burr is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she is a member of the Bahruth Circle, adult Sunday school class, Elder, clerk of session and moderator of the worship committee.? She is a member of the Ark City Chamber of Commerce.

Other volunteer work includes Habitat for Humanity, 50s decade reunion at Arkalalah and the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame.?

She received a certificate of appreciation from Habitat for Humanity in 2007 and acknowledgement from the University of Kansas for 25 years in public education in 2004.

Sally married Gene Burr in 1959. They have two sons, Kevin, who is the principal at Tulsa’s Will Rogers High School; and Steve, a cardiovascular specialist with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Kansas City.?

She has three grandchildren: Jordan, Britton and Nicholas.?

She attended Cowley College and graduated from Dodge City Community College, as well as St. Mary of the Plains College, where she earned a degree in English and Journalism.?

She earned a master’s degree from Kansas State University in 1981 and a juris doctorate from Oklahoma City University in 1988. She was admitted to the Bar in Oklahoma in 1988. Sally grew up in Ark City, but lived in various communities before returning to Ark City in 2003.

Sally was selected for the award by the Community Cornerstone Award selection committee, which includes Dolly Bonfy, Karl Faidley, Erv Knocke, Arleta Rice, Wayne Short and Yazmin Wood.?

All are previous recipients of the Cornerstone Award.?
