UPDATE: Authorities find wanted man Friday

UPDATE 9:30 p.m.: Authorities arrested Billie G. Francis ? a man wanted on warrants in Sedgwick County and Arkansas City ? hours after a search for him had ended Friday.

Francis fled into a wooded area north of Winfield around noon and was able to avoid detection during an hours-long search. He was spotted again around 8:30 p.m. and subsequently captured.

Francis is a convicted felon.

UPDATE: Undersheriff Bill Mueller said the suspect is described as a slender black male in his late 20s. He is wanted on warrants from another county.

A farmer, Larry Schwintz, found a strange car near a shed and called the sheriff. It was reported earlier that the farmer saw a man flee but he later said he only saw footprints leading into a field.

A woman has been take into custody, Mueller said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Cowley County Trackers are aiding in the search for the suspect.

Authorities are searching for a wanted man hiding in a wooded area north of Winfield Friday, Cowley County undersheriff Bill Mueller has confirmed. The man fled earlier today.

The sheriff’s department has secured an area along 132nd Rd. and is searching for the suspect they say has some outstanding warrants. It was not immediately clear how the search began.
