Woman injured in Saturday wreck has died

UPDATE: 1:35 p.m. Sunday – An 89-year-old rural Ark City woman has died of injuries sustained when the car she was driving collided with an oncoming pickup on U.S. 77 south of Ark City Saturday, undersheriff Bill Mueller said.

Jeanne Fitch had reportedly stopped breathing at the scene and was later transported to Southern Kansas Regional Medical Center, where she later died.

The 2004 Chevy pickup, that Fitch’s 2005 Dodge Stratus collided with, was driven by Amos M. Surface, 42, Winfield. He suffered only minor injuries and refused treatment.

Mueller said Fitch had stopped at a stop sign at 306th Lane on the west side of U.S. 77. She pulled onto U.S. 77 intending to go north on the highway and pulled directly in front of Surface’s truck, which was traveling south on the highway.

Surface had no opportunity to avoid the collision and struck Fitch’s vehicle on the driver’s side.

No charges have been filed.
