One person was critically hurt and at least two more were seriously injured in a five-car accident on U.S. 77 just north of Strother Field Friday night.

Emergency dispatchers were receiving reports of a driver going the wrong way ? southbound into northbound traffic ? just before the accident was reported. Investigators think a Chevy Impala involved in the crash was operated by the wrong-way driver.

That person was in critical condition and rushed to the hospital shortly after the accident.

Emergency crews used extrication equipment to free the person inside the Impala.

It was just after 8 p.m. when the collision occurred on a dark and rainy section of 77. The Impala, a GMC Yukon, a Buick Riviera and two other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Northbound traffic was shutdown entirely for about two hours as an investigation and clean up effort took place. Emergency personnel treated or screened 10 people that were part of the aftermath of the crash.

While the incident occurred on a windy, cold and rainy night, weather was not believed to be a factor. The Kansas Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation.
