Vernon Osborn

Vernon Leroy Osborn, 78, of Burden, Kan., passed away Sunday afternoon, May 16, 2010, at the Dexter Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 19. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials have been established in Leroy’s name for the Burden Baptist Church, Burden United Methodist Church, Hospice Care of Kansas and the Burden Volunteer Fire Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Born on February 22, 1932, in Winfield, he was the son of Leland and Thelma (Stout) Osborn. He was raised and received his education in Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage on November 24, 1951, to Louise Smith in the Burden Baptist Church. The couple made their home in Burden and Leroy farmed and raised cattle his entire life. Leroy was employed as a foreman for several construction companies including Jim Hensley Construction, McGee & Lewis, Shore and Sons, and Sherwood Construction of Oklahoma.

Leroy had attended Mt. Vernon Church and Burden Baptist Church. He served on the Watershed District Committee. He enjoyed welding, farming and tending to his cattle.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise, of the home; his son, Jimmy Osborn and wife, Jeleane, Grand Lake Town, Okla.; his daughters: Janice King, Wichita; and Katy Hiatt, Arkansas City; his grandchildren, Tyler and Heather Osborn, Tyson and Kendra Osborn, Tamara and Jake Schroeder, Chris and Ashley King, Tate and Beth Osborn, Barclay and Bret Shaffer, Jenna King and fiance’, Travis L’Hommedieu, Brogan Hiatt, Chris Benest and Andrea Benest; his great-grandchildren, Taven Ray Osborn, Brett Benest, Cash Schroeder and two great-grandchildren to arrive later in the year.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jimmy Hiatt, and his daughter-in-law, Marcia Osborn.
