Fireworks likely to blame for fire near Winfield

Fireworks appear to have contributed to a fire that gutted a garage ? and destroyed a vehicle ? at a home in the Whispering Meadows subdivision south of Winfield late Sunday. No one was injured.

Around 11 p.m., fire crews were sent to 4519 Meadowbrook Lane for the report of a structure fire. The blaze was confined to a double garage attached to the home.

Damage to the garage and its contents was extensive. Large fans were being used to remove heavy smoke that wafted into the home’s living areas.

Remnants of shot fireworks were visible in the driveway of the home and the fire appeared to start on the exterior, roof area of the garage, according to Winfield fire chief Curtis Wilson. An official cause, though, won’t be known until a full investigation into the fire is complete.

The home’s owners are Marcus Adler and Michelle Adler, according to online records maintained by the Cowley County Appraiser’s office. The home and property are valued at just under $210,000.
