Police name two suspected in auto burglaries

Winfield Police have identified two men expected to be charged in a string of car break-ins and burglaries dating as far back as May.

Michael B. Walker, 19, Wichita, and Robert S. Williams, 23, Winfield, face up to nine counts of burglary, eight counts of theft, 11 counts of criminal damage to property and two counts of criminal use of a financial card.

Williams is also expected to face a charge of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and forgery.

Police Wednesday prepared paperwork to be submitted to the county attorney’s office.

Walker is in the custody of Sedgwick County in regard to an incident there. Williams was first arrested on a Harvey Co. warrant – the arrest that led to the break in the case – but has since bonded out.

Winfield Lt. Det. Frank Owens said the investigation was jump started when Williams was found walking in 2700 block of E. 12th early on Aug. 14.

Officers spoke with Williams and briefly drove away before learning the man had an outstanding warrant. Police turned around, drove back and took Williams into custody.

A subsequent pat down of the suspect led to a GPS navigation system being found in his pocket. The device was determined to be linked to a car break in earlier in the night that was similar to numerous other break-ins in the area.

The investigation into Williams’ involvement led to Walker. The men told police they were reselling stolen GPS systems in Wichita.
