Drowning was the cause of death for two people found dead inside a partially submerged SUV Friday, Cowley County Sheriff Don Read said.
Autopsies were performed on the bodies of Cortney Brewer and Jay Patterson Saturday at the Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center in Wichita. They were found inside a vehicle pulled from the Arkansas River southeast of Ark City.
Pathologists determined that both Brewer and Patterson drowned when their vehicle landed upside down in the river.
Toxicology results ? which would determine whether either person was using drugs or alcohol ? will not be available for several weeks.
Investigators believe Brewer and Patterson were victims of traffic accident.
