Crime of month: Handgun, police badge taken

The theft of a pistol and Winfield Police Department badge is the unsolved Crime of the Month for December.

Sometime after Dec. 18, an unknown person or people entered a residence at 1720 Frankfort in Winfield. Once inside the residence a Colt 357 pistol, a duty belt with holster and a Winfield Police Department reserve badge were taken.

The owner of the residence is a former reserve officer for the Winfield Police Department. The estimated value of the loss is $750.00.

As a result of the theft, the police department has issued a reminder that if there is any doubt as to the credentials of someone displaying a badge, a simple call to the Winfield Police Department will verify whether they are legitimate or not.

Badges can be ordered through police supply stores and through collectors but police officials said theft of a badge is particularly concerning because the intent of the person taking it is unknown.
