Beat winter blahs with a WAHC pottery class

Winfield Arts & Humanities Council is looking for a few people who want to get their hands dirty.

The council’s adult ceramics class, where students can learn to construct clay bowls and cups using a pottery wheel or build an item such as a vase by hand, was slated to begin this week, but is temporarily on hold until more students sign up, according to Cheryl Tate, executive director.

If the chance to be up to your elbows in terracotta clay isn’t incentive enough, local artist Martha Fitzwater’s presence should stimulate interest. Fitzwater, who currently teaches art at Winfield High School, is a wealth of information on glazes, clay manipulation and generally all things pottery. Fitzwater returns as head of the WAHC ceramics class after a four year hiatus.

For those looking for a chance to ease the winter blahs, pottery classes have been proven to help alleviate depression through the creative process and the soothing tactile nature of the art, according to a number of online sources. The class is also a good opportunity to make a decorative clay herb pot for your spring garden.

Provided the class number is reached, sessions begin Jan. 25 – Mar. 15 (no class Mar. 1) from 6-8 p.m. for ages 16 and up. Location is the Baden Square community center art room. For the $60 fee students can make up to 3 pieces.

If you know someone who would like to take the class but is short on funds, why not consider sponsoring them as a gift?

Sign up today and become a part of Winfield’s art community.
