Local belly dancers dancing in Orpheum show

Amira Dance Productions’ 36th Annual Dance Magic 2011 show – set for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita – will feature three local dancers, all part of the Rakasat Hefennu dance troupe based in Winfield.

Dancers "Jolilah" and "Shahailah" will perform traditional belly dance with troupe Sahara Wind out of Rose Hill, under the directorship of their troupe leader, Raven.

Winfield’s own belly dance instructor and head of Rakasat Hefennu, Jadzia, will lead her Wichita based troupe, the Mysfit Toyz. The Toyz are an alternative belly dance group performing an Afro-industrial fusion, based on the up-and-coming art form bursting out of the Washington D.C. dance scene.

Fusion dances are the blending of two or more different styles. In this case two traditional dances from West Africa (the tiriba and the yole) merged with industrial club dancing to form Afro-industrial fusion.

Rakasat Hefennu is seen at Winfield events throughout the year including the Walnut Valley Farmer’s Market and Art in the Park.

Each year the Dance Magic show draws more than 60 talented local dancers and thousands of enthusiasts from all over Wichita and the surrounding areas.

The house is usually packed, so advance ticket purchases are a great way to ensure you have a seat and can avoid long lines.

This year’s talent line up is sure to please, including hula dancers, East Indian dancers, folkloric belly dance and even a special group of fencers.

Dance Magic tickets are available from Jadzia who can be reached by email at jadziabellydance@gmail.com or by phone at 620-218-9035.
