Girl, 11, critically injured in crash near Atlanta

A young girl was critically hurt west of Atlanta Friday night when the car she was in crashed into a truck that was stopped in a smoke-covered section of the roadway, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Megan Hoffman, 11, was in a 1998 Buick that was east bound on Cowley 2 when it struck the truck and then rolled. Hoffman and the driver, Kelly L. Hoffman, 52, both of Atlanta, were trapped in the vehicle for a time.

Woman and child were taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita following the accident. Each was wearing her seat belt when the crash occurred, according to the KHP.

Megan Hoffman was listed in critical condition Saturday morning, according to a hospital spokesperson. Kelly Hoffman is in fair condition.

The accident happened around 6:45 p.m. when the Hoffman vehicle collided with a 1992 Dodge truck that was stopped in the road. Robert J. Fleitz, 32, Winfield, was the truck’s driver and was in the area burning a field.

He suffered minor injuries but was not transported to the hospital.

Heavy rain, from storms that quickly moved into the area, hampered emergency efforts at the accident scene. An air ambulance was unable to launch due to the weather.
