Cowley County Sheriff’s Reports for April 22 – 24, 2011

APR 22

Deputies were dispatched to the 11000 block of 322nd Rd. regarding a hit-and-run accident involving damage to a county Road sign and an adjacent field.

Deputies assisted Cowley County residents capture a cat that needed to be caught and removed from the residence.

Deputies were dispatched to the 33000 block of Second road for a welfare check on residents who had been unable to be contacted for some time. Before arrival deputies were advised to disregard as the residents had been contacted and were fine.

Deputies were dispatched to the 10000 block of 322nd Rd. for a welfare check on a resident who could not be contacted. He was located and was fine.

Deputies transported a prisoner to the Cowley County jail for the Ark City Police Department.

Deputies took to a report regarding a person improperly claiming a child as a dependent on state and federal income tax returns. Deputies were dispatched to the 1500 block of South M, Ark City, regarding a complaint of trash being improperly dumped.

Deputies and Winfield Police officers transported an involuntary mental health commitment from Winfield to Larned State Hospital.

Deputies took possession of a handgun found lying on the edge of US 77 just north of the Oklahoma state line.

Deputies arrested Dawn Watson, Winfield, on a failure to appear warrant.

Deputies assisted a hitchhiker reported to be in the 35000 block of US 160.

Deputies checked an abandoned vehicle in the 22000 block of US 77.

Deputies checked a report of smoke across the Highway in the 20000 block of US 160.

Deputies were dispatched to a residential alarm in the 1900 block of Kitch Road.

Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 9000 block of 85th Court.

APR 23

Deputies assisted Ark City Police officers, who were all busy with other calls, by checking a report of unwanted persons around the house in the 200 block of Virginia.

Following a stop for a minor traffic violation in the 900 block of East 12th, Winfield, the female driver was arrested for driving under the influence and transporting an open container.

Deputies stopped a vehicle for a speeding violation in the 4000 block of 322nd Rd. The license tag on the vehicle was reported as being stolen, but further investigation determined that was an erroneous entry and it was not currently stolen. All occupants were released with a warning for the speeding violation.

Deputies assisted a patient who was being released from the South Central Kansas Medical Center with a ride into Ark City.

Deputies took a theft report from a Burden resident who had discovered his drivers license and VISA card missing, apparently having been lost while at a business in Derby the prior afternoon.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of cattle out on the Highway in the 34500 block of US 166. The owner was identified and contacted. He took care the cattle.

Deputies were advised of a Wichita resident who had not returned home after having gotten off work from a Winfield business at about 12:30 AM that morning. The Winfield Police Department, hospital, jail and place of employment were checked and none had any information regarding that person. The person’s normal travel route home was checked and nothing was found. Deputies were subsequently contacted by the person who advised they were safely home, and it had just been a misunderstanding of what they were planning to do after work that morning.

Deputies assisted the Udall Fire Department with traffic control at the scene of a grass fire with smoke blowing across the highway in the 4000 block of K-15.

Deputies checked an abandoned vehicle in the 6100 block of 202nd Rd.

Deputies checked an out of gas motorist in the 18000 block of US 77.

Deputies were dispatched to Atlanta on a report of dogs killing chickens.

Deputies were dispatched to a report that someone had thrown a beer can from a vehicle almost striking another vehicle in the 32000 block of US 77. The vehicle was located and stopped by Ark City Police officers in the city of Ark City. The occupants were cited by Ark City Police officers for transporting an open container and a deputy cited one passenger for littering for throwing the beer can out of the car.

Deputies were dispatched to the 10000 block of 282nd Rd. for a welfare check on the resident.

Deputies responded with the Ark City Fire Department to a grass fire in the 25000 block of US 77.

Deputies were dispatched to the 700 block of Walsh road regarding a complaint of juveniles riding go-carts on the roadway.

Deputies were dispatched to a loud music complaint in the 30500 block of 55th Dr.

Deputies were dispatched to a vehicle burglary report in Udall.

Deputies arrested Steven Scott Grimes, rural Ark City, on a warrant charging forgery, theft and intimidation of a witness.

Deputies were dispatched to the 900 block Of Holloway Ln., Winfield, to take a report of a car/deer accident that had occurred in the 5000 block of US 77.

Deputies checked a vehicle with three occupants parked at 31st Rd. and 202nd Rd.

APR 24

Deputies stopped a vehicle whose driver was not wearing a seat belt in the 800 block of Millington. The driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

Deputies were dispatched to a trash dumping complaint in the 21100 block of 92nd Rd.

Deputies were dispatched to Cambridge regarding a lost cell phone. The phone was ultimately located and returned to the owner.

Deputies were dispatched to a two vehicle non-injury accident in the 25000 block of 31st Rd.

Deputies were dispatched to an electronic harassment complaint in the 6000 block of 244th Pl.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of gunshots being heard in the 19600 block of 81st Rd.

Deputies arrested Kiera Lee Zimmerman, Ark City, on a failure to appear warrant.

Deputies were dispatched to a car/deer accident in the 9000 block of 21st Rd.
