Joseph Ashenfelter

Joseph “Joe” Bryan Ashenfelter, 32, of Cambridge, Kan., passed away Monday morning, April 25, 2011, at his home in Cambridge.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Cambridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 p.m.

Memorials have been established in Joe’s name for the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department and for the Asperger’s Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Born July 21, 1978, in Coffeyville, he was the son of Jerry and Rita (Sexton) Ashenfelter. He was raised helping on the family farm and ranch in Cambridge. He received his education in both Atlanta and Burden, graduating from Central High School in 1997. After High School he attended Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City.

Joe was a dedicated volunteer in the Burden and Cambridge Communities. His volunteer work included: fire fighting with the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department; working as a police officer with the Burden Police Department; being a storm chaser; working as a Physical Education Aide for the Burden Schools; and being heavily involved with the church youth group.

He was an active member of the Burden United Methodist Church. He enjoyed volunteer work, putting on firework shows, and especially enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

His family includes: His parents: Jerry and Rita Ashenfelter of Cambridge; His sisters: Lora Bennet and husband, Michael of Lansing; Lisa Braun and husband, Jason of Burden; His aunt: Sammie Sexton of Hays; His uncle: Michael Ashenfelter of Bartlesville, OK; His nieces: Haley Bennet; Sara Bennet; His nephews: Matthew Bennet; Logan Braun; James Braun; and His cousins: Christopher Wilhelm; Blake Ashenfelter.

Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents Forrest and Ruth Ashenfelter, and Ralph and Viola Sexton.
