Obama: Osama Bin Laden killed in Pakistan

Osama Bin Laden, a terrorist ringleader thought to be the mastermind of the 911 attacks, has been killed, President Barack Obama said Sunday night.

The announcement came during a late-night press conference that was hastily arranged. Bin Laden is said to have died in a firefight after being pinned down by U.S. forces in Pakistan.

Bin Laden has been the most sought after terrorist leader since the attacks on the World Trade Center towers in Sept. of 2001.

“For over two decades, bin Laden has been Al Qaeda’s leader and symbol,” the president said in a statement carried on television. “The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat Al Qaeda. But his death does not mark the end of our effort.” He added, “We must and we will remain vigilant at home and abroad.”
