Driver crunches car in late night crash Monday

Ashley McFarlin was just about to doze off Monday when something went bump in the night just outside her Winfield home.

Around 11:50 p.m., a white Chevy pick up truck crashed into the car McFarlin had parked out front of her house on E. Eighth Ave. It’s a car she’s only had a couple of months.

The collision was such that it sheared the driver’s-side, front wheel off the pick up. McFarlin found wheel and tire just behind her car.

“We heard a loud crash,” she said. “Me and my husband ran downstairs just in time to see him driving away on three wheels. There were sparks flying.”

McFarlin’s husband hopped in another vehicle and started following the fleeing driver. There was an off-duty Winfield police officer in the area who happened upon the scene and the officer joined in the brief pursuit.

With a missing wheel, the driver wasn’t going anywhere discreetly. A gouge in the road served to mark the man’s trail as he drove several blocks.

Duane Mortimer, 65, was located at the corner of Simpson and McCabe. He’s facing charges that include driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to report an accident.
