Power outage affects Winfield, towns Friday

About 8,000 Winfield utility customers were without power for just under an hour late Friday during a system-wide outage.

Affected residents were in Udall, Dexter, Burden, rural Atlanta, rural Cambridge and Winfield. Atlanta and Cambridge city residents are not Winfield power customers.

Winfield City Manager Warren Porter said a transformer break at a tie substation caused the blackout. Local power crews are working to fully assess the issue.

Emergency dispatchers were inundated with phone call inquiries as power turned the city black around 10 p.m. Service began to be restored about 10:50 p.m.

The city did make plans to start a backup generator to supply additional power.

At least one store closed early and patrons of some local drinking establishments stepped outside to watch as local police directed traffic.
