Mike Morton pleads to pot growing on Monday

Prominent Cowley County Democrat Mike Morton has entered a plea agreement in connection with a local pot growing operation that was discovered by authorities last year.

On Monday, Morton pleaded no contest and was found guilty of a single count of marijuana cultivation, a felony.

In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss minor drug-related charges in the case and also will not contest Morton seeking probation rather than imprisonment.

The final decision on sentencing, which is set for 1:30 p.m. July 18, will be left to Judge Nick St. Peter.

In October, Morton, 55, was arrested after authorities discovered a weed-growing operation on property Morton owns near Udall. Investigators said that nearly 200 pounds of marijuana, in various stages of processing, was recovered.

Morton and others were arrested. All have, or are expected to, enter plea agreements in the case.

Morton has been active with the Cowley County Democratic Party and also has campaigned for local and state candidates.
