GE, 2 unions reach tentative labor agreement

A tentative four-year agreement between General Electric Co. and two of its key unions was reached Sunday. The deal covers workers at GE Engine Services plants in Cowley County.

The contract is between GE and the International Union of Electric Workers/Communications Workers of America and United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America.

Those two unions cover roughly 15,200 GE workers or 11 percent of the company’s U.S. employees.

A 2007 contract is set to expire on Sunday and there had been concern about a labor strike that would effect local plants. Among the key sticking points in four weeks of negotiations was health care expenses.

Retirement plans, job security and wages were also said to be key issues.
