Fighting pair leads cops to meth bust Monday

Two people were arrested early Monday following a fight at a home in Ark City that eventually led investigators to a “large amount” of equipment commonly used to make meth, police there said.

Around 6:42 a.m., officers were called to 210 W. Spruce in response to a disturbance. Police learned of an altercation between a man and woman that continued to intensify to the point that the woman brandished a machete and threatened the man, according to police Capt. Tom Scott.

After the machete was taken from the woman, the fight continued. Eventually the man, Bryan Atkins, was able to flee the residence.

A neighbor called police who arrested Atkins and Kristy O’Donnell on domestic-violence related charges.

Hours later, police received another call related to the early morning incident. The caller informed police that the altercation had actually started hours before police were first called.

The quarreling pair was accused of stealing property that belonged to others living at the home. Police went back to the residence on Spruce to retrieve any stolen property and discovered items outside the home commonly used to produce meth.

Search warrants were obtained and officers from Ark City, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Cowley County Drug Task Force, removed manufacturing equipment and byproduct from the home, Scott said.

Both O’Donnell and Atkins are being held on drug and domestic violence-related charges.

Their bond has been set at $60,000 each.
