Applications sought for fifth police academy

The Winfield Police Department is now accepting applications for its fifth Citizen’s Police Academy.

Each year, the department conducts the academy for citizens who have in interest in the jobs performed by local law enforcement officials. The class begins Sept. 1 and meets each Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The course is designed to put citizens in a hands-on roll so they can see and experience the work and life of a police officer.

Topics that are covered over the 12 weeks include, traffic stops, S.W.A.T., drug investigations, search warrants, K9, search and seizure, courtroom testimony, officer survival and police personalities, death investigations, crime scene investigation, as well as tours of area law enforcement facilities.

Anyone interested in participating in the program must fill out an application.

Applications can be picked up in person in the dispatch center at the police department at 812 Millington.

Applications can also be faxed or e-mailed to interested parties by contacting Michelle Sisson at 221-5545.

To be considered for the program applicants must be 21 years of age or older and live or work in Winfield.

They must be free of felony convictions or numerous misdemeanor convictions. Applications must be turned into Sisson no later than August 11.
