Winfield woman found dead at Wichita motel

A young Winfield woman was found dead in a Wichita motel room late Friday night.

The body of Trisha Nungesser, 23, was discovered in a room at America’s Best Value Inn in the 5500 block of West Kellogg some time after 9:30 p.m., according to police Lt. Ken Landwehr. Officers were responding to a report of shots fired at the motel.

Investigators have determined the woman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, he said.

Armen Rothwell, 33, was arrested at the scene and faces a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. He and Nungesser have a child together.

As is standard, Landwehr said, the case was investigated as a homicide until police could determine otherwise.

Friends told police the woman had made previous attempts at taking her own life.

Nungesser attended Winfield schools and was a long-time resident of this area.
