UPDATE: Missing girls found safe Saturday

UPDATE: 4:30 a.m. Saturday – Two girls were found uninjured Saturday following an hours-long search that ensued after they went missing Friday night at Camp Horizon.

Cowley County undersheriff Bill Mueller confirmed the girls – ages 16 and 11 – were discovered around 1:30 a.m. Mueller did not know exactly how far the girls had ended up from where they departed but said it was a considerable distance.

The two had been walking at Camp Horizon and disappeared shortly before a storm struck the area.

Authorities searched for several hours before the girls were found.

Trackers and law enforcement officers are looking for two girls who went missing at Camp Horizon east of Ark City Friday night.

Cowley County Sheriff’s Deputies, a K-9 unit from Winfield, an area tracking team and the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter have been assisting in the search. The two girls, who are thought to be ages 16 and 11, went for a walk and did not return.

The search continued until after midnight Saturday morning and has lasted around three hours or more so far.

Search parties from the camp had looked for the girls but had been unable to find them.

The Camp Horizon area was affected by thunderstorms moving through the area.

The camp is near a heavily wooded area that includes some potentially dangerous terrain.
