Man, 24, arrested after pursuit Thursday night

Cowley County authorities arrested a man late Thursday following a chase that began in Ark City and ended near Oxford, sheriff Don Read said.

Ismael Antonio Aldaba, 24, Ark City, faces charges for fleeing and eluding sheriff’s deputies, driving on a suspended license and illegal registration. He faces similar counts in Ark City municipal court.

Around 9:25 p.m., the sheriff’s department learned Ark City police were in pursuit of a brown colored 2002 Ford Mustang. The car failed to stop when an officer attempted to make a routine traffic stop.

As the car made its way out of the city, sheriff’s deputies took over the pursuit.

The chase continued along various roadways northwest of Ark City and crossed into Sumner County. At times the fleeing driver drove between 70 and 90 miles per hour, Read said.

Eventually, the vehicle led authorities to Oxford Rd. and headed north toward Oxford. A police officer there blocked the south entrance to town with spike strips. Aldaba is said to have attempted to turn off of Oxford Rd. before finding there was no road on which to turn.

He stopped and exited the vehicle. Cowley County’s K9 unit was at the scene and the bark of the dog encouraged the driver to go to the ground and surrender.

“He cooperated after hearing the bark,” Read said. “He just asked that we not deploy the dog.”

Aldaba is said to have told authorities that he ran because he didn’t want to be arrested for a suspended license.

His bond is set at $4,500 and he is still in jail this morning.
