Man, 22, dies after jump from AC underpass

A young man died Wednesday, police said, from injuries he sustained after jumping from the railroad underpass on East Chestnut in Ark City.

The man, who was 22, was rushed to a local hospital but later died, according to police Lt. Jim Holloway. Witnesses said the man jumped from a van, which was moving at the time, climbed some concrete steps leading to a pump house area of the underpass and jumped several feet to the street below.

The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m.

“There were witnesses to it,” Holloway said. “It shocked a few people, obviously.”

There was no disturbance leading up to the incident, investigators said, and those inside the van were surprised by the man’s actions.

“According to witnesses, the jump was very deliberate,” Holloway said.

Police are still trying to determine whether the man said anything prior to exiting the van.

The area was closed to traffic for about 45 minutes.
