Wonder Hostess says store was losing dough

Lack of profitability led to the closing of the Wonder Hostess Bakery Outlet in east Winfield, a company spokesperson said.

The store closed abruptly last week.

“After evaluating the business it was clear that it was no longer a profitable location,” Jeff King said in a written statement responding to calls seeking comment. “Winfield is a wonderful community and we appreciate the service our employees have provided and the loyalty of our customers.”

King said the outlet had operated in Winfield for about 30 years. It first opened in a location on Main and later was relocated to 2122 E. Ninth.

The store employed one part-time and two full-time employees.

King did not speak in specifics in regard to the financial issues the store faced, but other sources said the outlet lost as much as $20,000 in the two-year period leading up to its closure.

Stock at the store had been allowed to slowly dwindle, remaining items were sold at a discount and the store closed for good last week.
