UPDATE: 5:55 p.m. Sunday – The woman injured in the shooting earlier Sunday is recovering in a Wichita hospital.
Susan Finney was listed in fair condition this evening at Wesley Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson said.
Cowley County Sheriffs deputies are investigating a shooting that occurred east of Winfield Sunday afternoon, undersheriff Bill Mueller said.
A female patient was transported to a Wichita hospital by air ambulance after being wounded by a gunshot to the face. Emergency crews were on scene for some time.
The incident occurred sometime around 1 p.m. The woman’s injuries are considered serious but not life threatening, according to information from the scene.
The woman was a passenger in a vehicle going west on 182nd Rd. when the shooting occurred. Someone was target shooting in the area and the bullet entered the vehicle through a window, striking the woman in the jaw.
The incident happened about a mile west of where 182nd intersects with Cowley 1.
Initial reports indicate the shooting was accidental, Mueller said, however the investigation is continuing.
