Driver hits horses in the road near Cedar Vale

A Chautauqua County driver was injured Thursday evening when her vehicle struck two horses in the roadway near the Chautauqua – Cowley County line, authorities said.

Some time after 8 p.m., Cowley County deputies were dispatched to a report of horses on U.S. 166 highway west of Cedar Vale. Before deputies could arrive, they learned the animals had been struck and injured.

Tammy A. Miller, 52, Cedar Vale, was identified as the drive of the 2002 PT Cruiser that struck the two horses. Miller was transported to a hospital in Sedan for minor injuries, according to reports from the sheriff’s department and Kansas Highway Patrol.

The horses were put down by an area veterinarian.

The accident occurred just west of the Cowley – Chautauqua County line.

Reports show Miller was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
