Cowley women take national title in volleyball

The Lady Tiger volleyball team from Cowley College won its first-ever national championship Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio.

After advancing to the finals, Cowley bested Oakland Community College of Michigan in the title match of the NJCAA Division II National Volleyball Tournament. Scores for the final match were 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21.

Cowley was the top-ranked team nationally most of the year and finishes the season on a 22-match win streak and with a record of 38-2. Oakland ended the year with a record of 41-4.

The Lady Tigers finished as national runners-up in 2005 and 2009.

The Lady Tiger volleyball team will arrive in Arkansas City Monday at noon and will be welcomed back with a celebration inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

It was a big weekend overall for Cowley athletics. Cleveland Indians’ slugger Travis Hafner, a Cowley alum, returned to Ark City Saturday afternoon for dedication of the newly-built Travis Hafner Training Center.
