Winfield mom arrested when child found alone

A Winfield mom was arrested Sunday evening after police investigated reports of a child yelling for their mother at a local apartment complex.

Just after 6 p.m., police were called to the 500 building at St. James Court when 911 dispatchers received calls in regard to a child yelling from a second-story window. One caller said they had been awakened by the child screaming.

An officer, Greg Venable, arrived on scene and was allowed into the apartment by an unattended child, age 7. An investigation determined the child had been left alone for several hours.

Eventually Venable spoke with the child’s mother, who was in Ark City at the time.

Two young children were placed in police protective custody as a result of the incident.

The mother, Misty Anderson, 39, Winfield, was arrested and could face a charge of child endangerment. Her bond was set at $1,000 and she was still in the Cowley County Jail as of Monday morning.

Police officials offered thanks to those who reported the incident to authorities.
