Incident in Winfield ends peacefully Tuesday

UPDATE: 8 p.m. – The incident started Tuesday afternoon at a residence in the 1100 block of Hillside.

Family and friends contacted authorities in regard to a man who was possibly having suicidal thoughts, according to assistant police chief Brett Stone. Authorities went to the home and could not make contact with the man.

There was a concern the person might have firearms inside the home and thus the SWAT unit was called. Surrounding homes in the neighborhood were evacuated as a precaution.

Negotiators eventually made contact with the subject.

It appeared that the subject may have been asleep in a secluded part of the home for at least a portion of the incident, which could explain why he initially did not respond to authorities, Stone said.

The man agreed to leave the home with negotiators and was to undergo a psychological evaluation.
