Cowley County Sheriff’s Reports for March 5 – 7, 2012

MARCH 5

Linn County Sheriff’s Office contacted deputies and advised of a possible suicidal person en route to Cowley County. Deputies were able to locate the individual and took him to a mental health evaluation without problems.

A child custody issue was checked in Udall.

Ark City Police officers, Winfield Police officers and deputies escorted a funeral procession from Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home at Ark City to the Veterans Cemetery at Winfield.

The theft of a 1978 Chevrolet three-quarter ton pickup, gray with a black stripe down the sides, and with a bale spear in the back was reported in the 26000 block of 155th Rd. The truck also had a green driver’s door and was taken sometime between 7:30 PM, Sunday evening, and 10 AM, Monday morning.

The welfare of horses was checked in the 600 block of Wright Avenue.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was assisted by deputies, after stopping a vehicle in the 22000 block of US 77. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia was found in the car.

A burglary was reported in the 14000 block of 22nd Rd. Several guns were taken from a residence in that burglary.

Winfield Fire Department and deputies were dispatched to the report of a truck on fire just west of the Winfield Livestock Auction on US 160. Upon arrival nothing was found.

A telephone harassment complaint was taken in the 6000 block of 306th Lane.

A neighborhood dispute was checked in the 1000 block of 72nd Rd. Also the condition of animals in that vicinity was checked.

Two suspicious vehicles were reported setting in the 22000 block of First Road.

A family dispute was checked in Hackney.

A disturbance was reported in the 11000 block of 144th Dr.

MARCH 6

Two horses were reported out in the 18000 block of 151st Rd.

A car/deer accident occurred in the 5000 block of US 166.

Burglary to a detached rods was reported in the 13000 block of US 160. Stolen were; a 9 mm pistol, several hundred rounds of ammunition, a shooting bag, propeller for a boat motor and several catalytic converters.

Suspicious activity that had occurred during the prior night was reported in the 4000 block of 252nd Rd.

Deputies were dispatched to the Floral area to check a report of suspicious person seen riding an ATV in the area. It was found to be persons logging timber in the area. Deputies also checked an abandoned house with an open door.

A car/deer accident occurred in the 15100 block of US 166.

Winfield Police officers and deputies were advised of a possibly ill or
disoriented motorist northbound on 111th Rd. from US 160. Deputies checked from US 162 132nd Rd., but did not find a motorist. Winfield Police officers subsequently found and checked him in the city of Winfield.

Winfield Police officers and deputies were advised of a juvenile who had left his elementary school in Winfield on time, but had not gotten home as scheduled. The area was searched by officers and deputies. The juvenile was located and returned to his mother.

A two car accident occurred at US 77 and 212th Rd.

A motorcycle accident occurred at 85th Rd. and 202nd Rd. It was found to be a non-injury accident with very minor damage to the motorcycle.

Wendell Kirk Barnes was arrested on an Ark City Municipal Ct. warrant for failure to appear.

A prisoner was transported to the Cowley County jail for the Ark City Police Department.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of auto parts having been stolen from several vehicles at a property in the 900 block of South Ninth, Ark City.

An anvil and metal plate was reported stolen from a residence in the 9000 block of 91st Rd..

An open door on a shop building at Valley Co-op was reported in Hackney.

Someone loading material from a demolition site was reported in the 17000 block of 32nd Rd.

A female was reported walking along US 160 about 2 miles east of Oxford. Prior prior to the arrival of deputies, and Oxford Police officer located the female, discovered she was a juvenile runaway from Oxford and returned her.

Deputies were dispatched to the 16000 block of 192nd Rd. to check a vehicle the landowner had found parked there. The vehicle was found to have been stolen from Winfield in a case being investigated by the Winfield Police Department.

MARCH 7

A complaint of dogs chasing livestock was received in the 21000 block of 102nd Rd.

A horse was reported out at K-15. The location was determined to be in Sumner County so the call was referred to Sumner County Sheriff’s Office..

Automobile parts were reported stolen from a resident in the 900 block of South Ninth, Ark City.

Gary Richard Owen, Winfield, was arrested for a protective order violation at the request of the Ark City Police Department.

An out of gas motorist was assisted in the 5000 block of US 77.

Cambridge, burden, Dexter and Atlanta Fire Departments and deputies responded to a grass fire started by a passing train in the 31000 block of US 160.

Shooting was reported near the Co-op in Rock. A neighboring resident was found target shooting.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of someone possibly stealing copper wiring from utility poles in the 22000 block of 62nd Rd. It was found to be a Westar employee working in the area.

A neighborhood dispute was checked in the 1000 block of 72nd Rd.

A loud music complaint was received in the 5000 block of 312th Rd.

A suspicious vehicle was seen in the 13000 block of 172nd Rd.

A tree was reported in the road in the 11500 block of 296th Rd. Cowley County Road and Bridge personnel were contacted and responded to clear the tree from the road.
