Man nabbed after fleeing from police Sunday

Local police arrested a Winfield man Sunday after he was said to have fled from an officer who tried to stop the suspect for driving without using headlights.

James Marler, 28, was arrested after the early morning incident, which began in an alley in the 400 block of E. 13th in Winfield. Marler posted a bond of $2,800 the same day he was apprehended and has been released, according to jail records.

Police were investigating a report of shots fired in the 500 block of E. 15th when they spotted Marler, who was observed driving his vehicle without using the headlights. When officers tried to execute a traffic stop, the suspect vehicle sped up.

After making several turns and attempting to avoid stopping, Marler hit a tree on 14th. He then fled on foot and ran away.

An officer, according to a written report of the incident, was able to tackle Marler. The two were involved in a skirmish when the officer struck the suspect with his fist and knocked him down.

The suspect is said to have remained combative until an officer drew his Taser and informed Marler he was about to be Tased. At that point the altercation ended and the man was taken into custody.

He is facing charges expected to include DUI, attempt to flee and driving on a suspended license.

No injuries were reported.
