$1,600 in stolen items found on suspect Sun.

A Wichita man was arrested Sunday after Ark City police apprehended him and uncovered a considerable amount of stolen merchandise.

Police were called to the 1000 block of N. Fourth around 4 p.m. by a person reporting that they had caught a person in their van by the alley. When the resident approached the suspect, he fled.

An hour later, police spotted a man matching the description of the suspect. He was riding a bike at Wilson Park, according to a report from police.

When officers approached, the man fled the area on the bike. He was pursued and eventually apprehended in some bushes north of the old Ark City hospital.

A backpack was recovered and inside police found over $1,600 worth of items stolen from Wal Mart. The suspect initially declined to cooperate with officers. When he did provide his name, it was learned he had three no-bond warrants in Sedgwick County.

While in custody, police said, the suspect, Jesse McLaughlin, 18, damaged the police department’s holding room.

Police found an underwater digital camera and the bicycle with the suspect. Anyone missing these items is asked to call police at 441-4444.

McLaughlin remained in jail Tuesday with bond set at $6,000. He is facing numerous counts for theft, obstruction and criminal damage.
