Driver who hit pedestrians will not be charged

Charges will not be filed against a female driver who was said to have struck two pedestrians with her vehicle as she left the scene of a skirmish in Winfield Friday night, a police official said Tuesday.

Around 9:45 p.m., police were called to the 1000 block of E. 13th in response to a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Initially, police had expected to charge the 19-year-old woman with a crime, but further investigation has led police to a different conclusion, according to assistant police chief Brett Stone.

“It appears she left the scene in a panic and that what she did wasn’t intentional,” he said.

It appears people had gathered in front of the vehicle just prior to the pedestrians being struck.

NewsCow has chosen not to name the driver because she was not arrested and will not be charged.

The two pedestrians were evaluated by EMS, treated and released.

Stone said the incident began at a residence following an altercation between two Winfield men. Zack C. Peters, 23, was found at the scene. A second man, Eric Paschal, 25, had left by the time officers arrived.

Paschal could face a charge of simple battery once information from the investigation is forwarded to prosecutors.
